Dry Eyes

Dryness, grittiness and watering are often the same problem: a tear film that evaporates too quickly. Screens, air conditioning and age all contribute. Most cases are managed well once the cause is identified.

Understanding dry eyes

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don't produce enough tears, or the tears evaporate too quickly, leaving the surface of the eye inadequately lubricated. The result is a gritty, burning or tired sensation that can affect comfort and vision throughout the day.

While dry eye is rarely serious, it can be persistent. Our specialists assess the underlying cause and recommend the most effective way to relieve your symptoms – and manage it carefully before any vision correction.

Common signs & symptoms

  • A gritty or “sandy” sensation
  • Burning or stinging
  • Redness and irritation
  • Blurred vision that clears when you blink
  • Watery eyes (a reflex response to dryness)
  • Tired, heavy eyelids

What causes dry eyes?

Dry eye becomes more common with age and is often linked to screen use, contact lens wear, air conditioning and certain medications. Hormonal changes and some medical conditions can also contribute.

Because a stable tear film is essential for accurate pre-surgery measurements, we always assess and treat dry eye as part of your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have laser surgery with dry eyes?

Often yes – SMILE Pro in particular is gentle on the tear film. We assess and manage dry eye before recommending treatment.

Will dry eye go away on its own?

Mild cases can improve with lifestyle changes, but persistent dry eye usually benefits from professional assessment.

Does screen use make it worse?

Yes – prolonged screen use reduces your blink rate, which can worsen dry eye symptoms.
