Blurred Vision

Blurring can come from a simple change in prescription, from dry eyes, or from something in the lens or retina that needs attention. Sudden blurring in one eye should always be examined promptly.

Understanding blurred vision

Blurred vision – when objects lose their sharpness or detail – is one of the most common reasons people seek an eye assessment. It may affect near vision, distance vision or both, and can come on gradually or suddenly.

Most blurred vision is caused by a refractive error and is easily corrected. However, sudden or persistent blurring should always be assessed to rule out other causes.

Common signs & symptoms

  • Loss of sharpness at near, distance or both
  • Needing to squint to focus
  • Haloes or glare around lights
  • Difficulty reading small print
  • Vision that fluctuates through the day

What causes blurred vision?

The most common causes of blurred vision are short-sightedness, long-sightedness, astigmatism and age-related presbyopia – all highly treatable. Cataracts, dry eye and other conditions can also blur vision.

Because sudden blurring can occasionally signal something more urgent, we recommend a prompt assessment if it appears quickly.

Gradual blur is usually a refractive error. Sudden blurring should be assessed promptly.

Can blurred vision be corrected permanently?

In most cases yes – laser or lens treatment corrects the underlying cause.

Why does my vision blur through the day?

Fluctuating blur can be linked to dry eye, tiredness or blood-sugar changes, and is worth assessing.
