Questions about the laser and lens methods we offer, what each involves, and how together we clarify your options. (54 questions)

How does SMILE Pro differ from LASIK?

The corneal opening in SMILE Pro is far smaller (around 2 mm) than the flap created in LASIK (around 20 mm). The stability of the cornea is therefore less affected, and flap-related complications are avoided.

Is it suitable if I have dry eyes?

SMILE Pro may be relevant if you are prone to dry eyes, because the treatment is flapless and affects fewer nerves in the cornea. At the assessment, we clarify whether the treatment may be relevant for you.

How long does the treatment take?

You are in the clinic for around an hour, but the laser itself works for only a matter of seconds per eye.

Is the result permanent?

SMILE Pro permanently changes the shape of the cornea. The result is usually stable long term, but natural age-related changes such as presbyopia can still occur later in life.

When can I drive again?

Usually within a few days, once a follow-up check has confirmed that your vision meets the legal driving standard.

Does LASIK hurt?

No. Before the treatment, you are given local anaesthetic eye drops, so the treatment does not normally hurt. Afterwards you may feel mild grittiness for a few hours.

How quickly will I see?

Most patients notice a dramatic improvement within a day or two.

How is LASIK different from SMILE Pro?

In LASIK a corneal flap is created, while SMILE Pro is performed without a flap and removes a lenticule through a small opening. You will be advised on which method may be relevant for you.

Is LASIK permanent?

Yes – the corneal correction is permanent, though age-related reading changes can still occur later.

Can both eyes be treated the same day?

Yes, both eyes are usually treated in the same short appointment.

Why choose PRK/LASEK over LASIK?

It avoids creating a corneal flap, which can be safer for thinner corneas or people in contact sports.

Is the recovery longer?

Yes, slightly. Vision usually takes a few days longer to settle while the surface heals.

Will it be uncomfortable?

You may feel some grittiness and light sensitivity for a few days; a protective lens and drops keep you comfortable.

Is the correction permanent?

Yes – laser reshaping is permanent, though age-related changes can still occur later in life.

When can I exercise again?

Light activity can usually be resumed within a few days. You will receive individual guidance on contact sports and swimming.

Am I too old for trifocal lenses?

There is no upper age limit – in fact, trifocal lenses are especially popular with patients over 50 and those developing cataracts.

Will I still need glasses?

The great majority of patients no longer need glasses for everyday tasks, though a few use light reading glasses for very fine print.

Is the procedure painful?

No. Your eye is numbed with drops and the procedure takes about 15 minutes per eye.

Can cataracts come back?

No. Once the natural lens has been replaced with an artificial lens, a cataract cannot develop in the artificial lens.

How soon can I drive?

Usually within a few days, once a check-up has confirmed that your vision meets the legal standard.

Can I feel the ICL in my eye?

No. Once in place the lens is completely invisible and cannot be felt.

Can an ICL lens be removed again?

Yes – unlike laser surgery, the ICL can be removed or exchanged if your needs change.

Is it suitable for high prescriptions?

ICL can be a relevant option for strong short-sightedness and astigmatism.

Does ICL help with dry eyes?

ICL may be relevant if you are prone to dry eyes, because no corneal tissue is removed.

How fast is recovery?

Many patients see clearly within a day, with full results over the following days.

Is Clear Lens Exchange the same as cataract surgery?

The procedure is the same, but it is performed before a cataract develops. Once the natural lens has been replaced, a cataract cannot develop in the artificial lens.

Will I need glasses afterwards?

With a trifocal or multifocal lens, most patients are glasses-free for everyday tasks.

Is there an age limit?

There is no upper limit; it is most popular from the mid-40s onwards.

Is the procedure safe?

Lens replacement is one of the most commonly performed and refined procedures in modern eye surgery.

What is the difference between EDOF and trifocal lenses?

EDOF lenses give a continuous extended range of vision with a lower degree of glare, while trifocal lenses provide distinct focal points at short, intermediate and long range. You will be advised on which type of lens may be relevant for you.

Will I need reading glasses?

Many patients manage most tasks without glasses; some use light reading glasses for very fine print.

Are EDOF lenses good for night driving?

Yes – they are designed to minimise haloes, which many patients value for night driving.

Is the procedure permanent?

Yes – the lens replacement is a permanent correction.

Which laser treatment might be relevant for me?

It depends on your individual measurements and visual needs. At the free assessment, we clarify whether SMILE Pro, LASIK or PRK/LASEK may be relevant for you.

Is laser eye surgery painful?

No – your eyes are numbed with drops and most patients feel little or no discomfort.

Is squint surgery only for children?

No – adults can benefit too. Alignment can be improved at any age.

Can strabismus surgery relieve double vision?

In many cases yes, though this depends on the underlying cause, which we examine thoroughly.

Is the surgery painful?

The procedure is done under anaesthetic; afterwards the eye may feel sore and red for a week or two.

Is the result of strabismus surgery permanent?

Squint surgery gives a lasting improvement, though occasionally a further adjustment is needed.

How do I know which treatment I need?

Your free assessment includes a full diagnostic examination. Your surgeon will explain which methods apply to your eyes, what each involves and the associated risks – or tell you if treatment is not suitable.

Is treatment painful?

Treatments are performed under anaesthetic drops and most patients feel little or no discomfort. Mild grittiness or watering for a few hours afterwards is common.

How long does it take?

Most procedures take around 15 minutes per eye and you go home the same day. Recovery varies by method – from a couple of days for SMILE Pro or LASIK to about a week for PRK/LASEK.

What does it cost?

Prices depend on the method and your prescription, and are confirmed in writing at your free assessment. See our pricing page for guidance. Interest-free financing is available; full details are provided at your assessment.

What age can I have laser vision correction?

From 18, provided your prescription has been stable for at least 12 months. Stability matters more than age – if your prescription is still changing, treatment is usually postponed.

How do SMILE Pro and LASIK differ?

LASIK creates a thin corneal flap and reshapes the tissue beneath it. SMILE Pro removes a small disc of tissue through a 2–4 mm opening without creating a flap, so flap-related complications cannot occur. Both are well documented; which is appropriate depends on your prescription and cornea.

Will I still need reading glasses later?

Most likely, yes. Laser correction treats your current prescription but does not prevent presbyopia, the age-related loss of near focus that affects almost everyone from around the mid-40s. Lens-based options exist at that stage.

Does the treatment hurt?

Your eyes are numbed with anaesthetic drops and most patients feel little or no discomfort during treatment. Mild grittiness or watering for a few hours afterwards is common.

How long until I can drive or exercise?

Most patients return to work within a few days. Driving resumes once your surgeon confirms your vision meets the legal standard. Swimming and contact sport are usually restricted for a few weeks.

Can I have laser eye surgery after 45?

Laser treatment corrects the cornea, but presbyopia originates in the lens inside the eye, so laser does not address it. For this reason lens-based options are usually the relevant ones from around 45. Your assessment will confirm what applies to your eyes.

Will I be free of glasses afterwards?

Most patients become independent of glasses for daily life, though some continue to use light reading glasses for very fine print. Individual results vary and no specific outcome can be promised in advance.

Can I get a cataract after lens replacement?

Not in the natural lens, because it has been removed. A clouding of the thin capsule that holds the lens – known as secondary cataract – can develop later in some patients. It is common and readily treated with a short laser procedure that takes a few minutes.

What are halos, and will I get them?

Halos are rings of light seen around headlights or streetlights at night. They are common after multifocal and trifocal lenses. For most patients they ease over the following months as the brain adapts, but they do not resolve completely for everyone. If you drive a great deal at night, tell your surgeon so it can be weighed in the choice of lens.

Is the treatment reversible?

No. Once the natural lens has been removed the procedure cannot be undone, although the artificial lens can in rare cases be exchanged. This is why the assessment and discussion beforehand matter.

What does it cost, and is there a subsidy?

Prices depend on the lens and are confirmed in writing at your free assessment – see our pricing page. Sygeforsikring “danmark” members and some private health insurance policies may be entitled to a subsidy, depending on membership group and policy terms. Interest-free financing is available; full details are provided at your assessment.

Conditions

Questions about the eye conditions we treat, their causes and symptoms. (48 questions)

Can myopia be corrected permanently?

Laser and lens treatments correct the refractive error so that light focuses correctly on the retina. The underlying shape of the eye is not changed back, and the correction does not prevent the natural age-related changes that affect near vision from around the mid-40s.

At what age can I be treated?

From 18, provided your prescription has been stable for at least 12 months. If it is still changing, treatment is normally postponed until it settles.

Is my prescription too high for laser?

Very high prescriptions or thinner corneas may make laser unsuitable. ICL is often the option considered in those cases. Your assessment will establish what applies to your eyes.

Will I need glasses again later?

Most people develop presbyopia from around their mid-40s and need reading glasses, whether or not they have had laser treatment. Lens-based options exist at that stage.

Is long-sightedness the same as presbyopia?

No, though they are often confused. Hyperopia is caused by the shape of the eye and can be present from birth. Presbyopia is the age-related stiffening of the lens that affects almost everyone from around the mid-40s. It is possible to have both.

Can laser treat long-sightedness?

Yes, within a certain range. Hyperopia is generally treatable up to moderate levels with laser. Beyond that, lens-based options are usually the ones considered.

Why has my near vision suddenly got worse?

If you have mild hyperopia, your eyes may have compensated for years by focusing harder. As that ability naturally declines with age, the underlying long-sightedness becomes noticeable, sometimes quite quickly.

Which treatment might be relevant for me?

That depends on your prescription, the thickness and shape of your cornea, your age and how you use your eyes. A full diagnostic examination is the only way to establish it.

Can presbyopia be prevented?

No. It is a normal part of ageing that affects almost everyone, and nothing prevents or delays it. It can, however, be corrected.

Why does laser not treat presbyopia?

Laser reshapes the cornea, but presbyopia originates in the lens inside the eye. For that reason lens-based options are usually the relevant ones for this age group.

Will trifocal lenses end my need for reading glasses?

Most patients become independent of glasses for daily life, though some use light reading glasses for very fine print. Individual results vary and no specific outcome can be promised in advance.

Am I too young or too old for treatment?

Presbyopia treatment is usually considered from around 45. There is no strict upper age limit – suitability depends on the health of your eyes rather than your age.

Is astigmatism a disease?

No. It is a variation in the shape of the cornea, present in some degree in most eyes. It only warrants treatment when it affects your vision.

Can astigmatism be corrected with laser?

In most cases yes. Both SMILE Pro and LASIK correct astigmatism, usually alongside short- or long-sightedness. Very high degrees may be better addressed with a toric implantable lens.

Will it get worse over time?

Astigmatism usually remains fairly stable through adult life. A marked or rapid change can indicate a corneal condition such as keratoconus, which is one of the things your assessment checks for.

Why do I see streaks around lights at night?

An uneven corneal surface scatters light rather than focusing it to a point, which is often most noticeable against headlights or streetlights in the dark.

Is cataract surgery safe?

It is among the most commonly performed and well-documented procedures in modern medicine. As with all surgery it carries risk, including infection and, rarely, a lasting reduction in vision quality. Your surgeon will discuss the risks relevant to your eyes.

Will I be awake during surgery?

Yes. Your eye is numbed with anaesthetic drops and most patients feel little or no discomfort. The procedure takes about 15 minutes per eye.

Can a cataract come back?

Not in the natural lens, because it has been removed. A clouding of the thin capsule that holds the lens – secondary cataract – can develop later in some patients. It is common and readily treated with a short laser procedure. More on secondary cataract.

Will I still need glasses afterwards?

That depends on the lens chosen. With a premium lens such as a trifocal, many patients no longer need glasses for daily life, though some use light reading glasses for very fine print. Individual results vary.

When should a cataract be treated?

When it begins to interfere with things you need to do – driving, reading, working. There is no requirement to wait until it is advanced.

Can I have laser surgery with dry eyes?

Often yes – SMILE Pro in particular is gentle on the tear film. We examine and treat dry eyes before recommending a treatment.

Will dry eye go away on its own?

Mild cases can improve with changed habits, but persistent dry eyes should be examined by an eye care professional.

Does screen use make it worse?

Yes – prolonged screen use reduces your blink rate, which can worsen dry eye symptoms.

Can tired eyes be a sign of something serious?

Usually not, but persistent strain can be a sign of an uncorrected vision problem that should be examined.

Can vision correction help?

Yes – correcting an underlying refractive error often resolves everyday eye strain.

How can I reduce eye strain at work?

Follow the 20-20-20 rule, ensure good lighting, and have your vision checked regularly.

Should I worry about blurred vision?

Gradual blur is usually a refractive error. Sudden blurring should be assessed promptly.

Can blurred vision be corrected permanently?

In most cases yes – laser or lens treatment corrects the underlying cause.

Why does my vision blur through the day?

Fluctuating blur can be linked to dry eye, tiredness or blood-sugar changes, and should therefore be examined.

Is double vision an emergency?

Sudden double vision should be assessed promptly. Long-standing double vision still warrants evaluation.

Can double vision be treated?

Yes – treatment depends on the cause and may involve lenses, surgery or managing an underlying condition.

Does a squint cause double vision?

It can. An eye-muscle imbalance is one of several possible causes that we look into more closely.

When should I worry about red eyes?

If redness comes with pain, discharge, light sensitivity or reduced vision, see a doctor promptly.

Why are my eyes red after screens?

Reduced blinking and dryness during screen use are common causes of temporary redness.

Can contact lenses cause redness?

Yes – over-wear or dryness from lenses is a frequent cause of chronic red eyes.

Is an ocular migraine dangerous?

Usually not, but a first or unusual episode should be assessed to rule out other causes.

How long do symptoms last?

Typically a few minutes up to about an hour, resolving completely.

Can eye strain trigger them?

Tiredness and eye strain are among the recognised triggers.

Why do my eyes water when they feel dry?

Dry eyes can, as a reflex, make the eyes produce more tears. This is a common cause of watering eyes.

Can watering eyes be treated?

Yes. Treatment depends on the cause and can include treating dry eyes or problems with tear drainage.

Can watering eyes be a sign of something serious?

Usually not, but eyes that water persistently and affect daily life should be examined.

Are floaters dangerous?

Most are harmless, but a sudden increase, flashes of light or a shadow needs urgent assessment.

Do floaters go away?

They often become less noticeable over time as the brain adapts, though they rarely disappear entirely.

When should I seek help urgently?

If you suddenly experience many new floaters, flashes of light or a curtain-like shadow in your field of vision, you should see a doctor or contact the emergency department straight away.
