Secondary Cataract

Months or years after lens surgery, the membrane behind the lens can become cloudy, so vision turns hazy again. A YAG laser can create a small opening in the membrane without a surgical incision. The treatment takes only a few minutes, and many people notice clearer vision the same day.

Understanding secondary cataract

Secondary cataract (posterior capsule opacification) can develop months or years after cataract surgery or lens replacement. The capsule that holds the artificial lens becomes cloudy, so vision blurs again, even though the lens itself remains clear.

Secondary cataract is common and can be treated with a short laser procedure called a YAG capsulotomy. Many people notice clearer vision shortly after the treatment.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Gradual blurring after previous lens surgery
  • Increased glare or haloes around lights
  • Reduced contrast or “washed-out” vision
  • A feeling that your cataract has “returned”
  • Difficulty with reading or night driving

What causes secondary cataract?

A secondary cataract is caused by cells growing across the lens capsule behind your artificial lens. It is a normal part of healing for some patients and is not a sign anything went wrong.

The treatment – a YAG laser capsulotomy – creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule to let light through again.

Frequently asked questions

Is a secondary cataract the same as a cataract?

No. Secondary cataract is a clouding of the capsule that holds the artificial lens, not of the lens itself. Secondary cataract can be treated with a YAG laser.

Does the laser treatment hurt?

No, the YAG laser treatment itself does not normally hurt. The treatment requires no surgical incision, and most people feel little or no discomfort. The experience can, however, vary from person to person.

Will it come back again?

No – once the capsule is treated with the YAG laser, a secondary cataract does not recur.
