Understanding double vision
Double vision (diplopia) is when you see two images of a single object, either side by side, one above the other, or overlapping. It can affect one eye or both, and may be constant or come and go.
Double vision always deserves a professional assessment. While some causes are simple and treatable, others need prompt attention, so we recommend booking an evaluation.
Common signs & symptoms
- Seeing two overlapping or separate images
- Images that separate when tired
- Headaches or eye strain
- Tilting the head to see more clearly
- Difficulty with reading or driving
What causes double vision?
Double vision can result from a refractive problem, a cataract, a muscle-balance issue (such as a squint), or occasionally a neurological cause. Identifying which is essential to the right treatment.
Our specialists carry out a thorough assessment to determine the cause and the most appropriate way forward.

Frequently asked questions
Is double vision an emergency?
Sudden double vision should be assessed promptly. Long-standing double vision still warrants evaluation.
Can double vision be treated?
Yes – treatment depends on the cause and may involve lenses, surgery or managing an underlying condition.
Does a squint cause double vision?
It can. An eye-muscle imbalance is one of several possible causes we assess for.
