The lens, normally clear, gradually becomes opaque so that less light reaches the retina and vision turns hazy, dull or washed out.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"kfe-text-col-body\"><p>Cataracts are extremely common and are a normal consequence of ageing, most often developing from around the age of 60. Surgery to replace the clouded lens is one of the most frequently performed procedures in modern medicine.<\/p><p>Cataract is a common age-related change in the lens of the eye. With age, the lens becomes cloudy, eventually giving symptoms such as misty vision, glare, difficulty reading, yellowing of colours and a general weakening of sight. Clouding of the lens can occur early in life due to eye injuries, metabolic disorders, diabetes and inflammatory conditions, and in some cases a tendency to early cataract is hereditary.<\/p><p>Cataract can be treated with lens surgery. This is done by removing the eye\u2019s natural lens through a very small self-sealing incision of about 2.4 mm and replacing it with an artificial lens. Other contributing factors include diabetes, long-term steroid use, previous eye injury or surgery, smoking, and prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes 15 minutes per eye.<\/p><p>The cataract is corrected by means of a refractive lens exchange, meaning the natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens. The natural lens sits immediately beneath the iris and consists of two parts: the lens nucleus and the lens capsule.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"kfe-text-block\" data-style=\"prose\"><h3 class=\"kfe-text-block-title\">The natural lens is removed<\/h3><p>First, the natural lens is removed. A small circular incision is made in the lens capsule, through which the lens nucleus is removed. The lens capsule is left in the eye and acts as a \u201cholder\u201d for the new lens.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"kfe-text-block\" data-style=\"prose\"><h3 class=\"kfe-text-block-title\">The new multifocal lens is implanted<\/h3><p>The new artificial lens is then inserted. The power of the lens is carefully calculated before the treatment on the basis of precise ultrasound measurements. You receive an artificial lens that is designed to last for the rest of your life.<\/p><p>This can be either a monofocal or a trifocal lens. As a monofocal lens has only one focal point, you may still need glasses after the treatment. A trifocal lens, by contrast, has several focal points and can therefore give good vision at different distances and reduce the need for glasses.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t<\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af8f1a0 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"af8f1a0\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c841b1c elementor-widget elementor-widget-kfe_text_section\" data-id=\"c841b1c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"kfe_text_section.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"kfe\">\t\t<section class=\"kfe-section kfe-text-section kfe-bg-white\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"kfe-wrap kfe-reveal\">\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"head\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"kfe-text-section-title\">Different lens types for treating cataract<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"kfe-text-col\"><div class=\"kfe-text-block\" data-style=\"prose\"><h3 class=\"kfe-text-block-title\">The advantages of trifocal lenses compared with monofocal lenses<\/h3><p>A cataract treatment can be performed with either monofocal or trifocal lenses.<\/p><p>Trifocal lenses have three focal points and are designed to give good vision at short, intermediate and long distances. This can reduce the need for glasses after the treatment.<\/p><p>By contrast, monofocal lenses have only one focal point and can therefore only provide good vision at either short or long distance. The cells in the eye's lens die and are not replaced as in most of the body's other organs; instead they are laid down on top of the existing cells. For the lens to remain clear, the cells and their protein content must lie in very precise patterns. Over the years, irregularities can arise that make the lens unclear.<\/p><p>The protein content of the cells also causes the lens nucleus to harden with age, so it is no longer able to curve the lens in the correct way. This means the focal point is displaced on the retina at short distances. Cataract can thus be regarded as part of the body's natural decline.<\/p><p>In the vast majority of cases, cataract occurs as a result of ageing, but the risk can be increased by the following influences:<\/p><ul><li>X-rays \u2013 either infrared or ultraviolet rays<\/li><li>Eye injuries and repeated inflammation of the iris<\/li><li>Smoking \u2013 both passive and active<\/li><li>Prolonged courses of treatment with corticosteroids<\/li><\/ul><p>Cataract can, however, also occur in connection with illnesses such as diabetes (diabetes mellitus) and other metabolic disorders. In addition, illness during pregnancy can increase the risk of the child being born with cataract. Only in rare cases are children born with cataract.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"kfe-text-block\" data-style=\"prose\"><h3 class=\"kfe-text-block-title\">One of the world&#039;s most common eye conditions<\/h3><p>Cataract is treated on an outpatient basis by surgically replacing the cloudy natural lens of the eye with a modern artificial lens, also called an intraocular lens. It is one of the most frequently performed and best-documented procedures in eye surgery.<\/p><p>EuroEyes has many years of experience in treating cataract, partly thanks to the pioneering work of Dr J\u00f8rn Slot J\u00f8rgensen. As early as 1990, he used a new micro-incision technique, phacoemulsification, for outpatient cataract treatment.
